Incorporated in May of 2015 with a dream of creating a communal HUB where we can grow as a community.
Why Quadrangle? The story behind the name
A quadrangle is a shared space that is enclosed in the centre of a group of buildings that back onto one another--a communal courtyard for activities and a resource for all those who use the buildings that surround it. Similarly, our aim is to create a centre that provides a shared community resource space that is flexible in how it can be used by community members and organizations--a shared space for building belonging across our differences, sharing resources, and honouring our strengths and experiences. The name also tips its hat to the historical significance of the triangle as a symbol of sexual diversity while at the same time acknowledging that our communities include sexual and gender diversity, and that the two are not reducible to the same thing.
Our Vision
To establish Newfoundland and Labrador as an inclusive, welcoming community regardless of race, ethnicity, age, gender, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, economic status and other diverse backgrounds.
Our Mission
To create a physical space welcoming to all members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in Newfoundland and Labrador, which will house and offer services and programs designed to create social connections, provide resources, and advance all aspects of health and the quality of life for our community through inclusion and diversity, community development, collaboration, and recognition.
Values
Our organizational values reflect our organization’s purpose and drive the work we do and the principles we uphold; they are our moral compass. By always abiding by our values we influence attitudes and behaviors.
Our key values are Respect, Transparency, Collaboration, Integrity, Accessibility, Intersectionality, and Support, each of which are connected to the three value based phrases below:
INCLUSION AND ACCEPTANCE
Everyone is welcome at Quadrangle regardless of race, ethnicity, age, gender, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, economic status and other diverse backgrounds. Acceptance is at the heart of all our work and discrimination of any kind is not tolerated.
COMMUNITY CONNECTEDNESS
Quadrangle is first and foremost a community of individuals working together to improve the quality of lives and experiences of 2SLGBTQIA+ people throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Our organization knows working together in support of our goals is the only way to provide supportive programming, to offer quality resources, and create a brighter future for all.
ENCOURAGEMENT AND ENGAGEMENT
Public engagement - like community connectedness - helps us understand the unique needs of 2SLGBTQIA+ people in Newfoundland and Labrador. Further, recognizing and celebrating community successes and milestones help our organization feature prominently in all areas of the province. Quadrangle is committed to hearing the viewpoints of all community members and inspiring diversity through every aspect of life in our province.
Our three Mandated pillars
To address and prevent specific problems faced by the 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals by establishing and operating a community centre with structured programs including social support groups, information programs on sexuality, peer counselling and mentoring as well as referral services based on their identified needs and goals.
To advance education and raise awareness about specific problems faced by the community by providing education seminars for the general public.
To address 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals unemployment by providing job skills training and employment assistance based on their identified needs.
This is for across the province with the HUB being in St. John’s to help ensure the resources the metro area has access to can be shared through partnerships and consultations.
