(Un)Covered: Sex at The Kitchen Table

With funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada’s HIV and Hepatitis C Community Action Fund, CBRC launched Pivot in 2019 in pilot sites across Canada. Pivot is a community health leadership program that equips queer, trans, and Two Spirit people with the social connections, health knowledge, and systems change skills they need to be health leaders in their communities. In 2020, they expanded their reach with more sites, including one in St. John’s NL, partnering with Quadrangle NL and the AIDS Committee of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Over the course of four days - a mix of in-person and online to adapt to COVID-19 - in March 2020, 2SLGBTQIA+ community members from St. John’s came together to gain an understanding of Community Health Foundations and learn how to ‘How to Change the World, One System at a Time.’ Participants work to develop and deliver an original intervention to address systems changes needed to improve the health of queer, trans, and Two Spirit people. 

For the St. John’s participants, they created an eight-part webinar series focusing on the exclusion of 2SLGBTQIA+ experiences from traditional sexual health education and outreach. Over the course of 6 months, community members from across the province were invited to join a casual and frank discussion of sexual health issues of importance to their community through (Un)Covered: Sex at the Kitchen Table.
